Friday 3rd — Friday 31st July 2020

We are proud to announce that we’ve teamed up with Bristol Buttr and Komoot as our official routing partner for the 2020 Trigonnée.

We have some awesome prizes lined up for the challenge but there’s more…

As a trigonneur, you’ll get a free* region bundle from Komoot. This allows you to unlock turn-by-turn voice navigation and offline maps in all of the region you choose— perfect for navigating your way around the Trigonnée.

Bristol Buttr are also offering 20% off all orders to all trigonneurs. Keep reading for all the information on how to claim this plus all the prizes we have up for grabs.

The Challenge

Trigonneuring—

Collect at many trig points in a single ride within in 24 Hours.

As always with Araf, slow is ok. The challenge is to get as many trig points as possible in a single ride. The goal is to get out and explore, even if that ends up being a ride to a single trig point, we know it will be worth it! There are over 6000 trig points in the UK alone, so you will have plenty of choice and you’ll be amazed at where some of them are! Expect some hike-a-bike to get to a few of them.

We’ve teamed up with Komoot as we think they offer a perfect platform for planning an adventure like this. If route planning is new to you Komoot makes it super easy. Once you have found your trig points you can set them as way points on the map and Komoot will plan the best route for you!

We love encouraging people to push them selves a to go a little bit further. This is why we have also teamed up with our favourite bum butter (anti-chafing cream) — Bristol Buttr. We have been using their cream for a while now not only does it smell great, it is built upon natural ingredients including lavender, tea tree and peppermint essential oils, as well as bees wax.

What is a Trig Point?

Trig points are physical reference points, usually a pillar or plaque found most commonly at peaks and highest points across a country used for surveying.

A triangulation station, also known as a triangulation pillar, trigonometrical station, trigonometrical point, trig station, trig beacon, or trig point, and sometimes informally as a trig, is a fixed surveying station, used in geodetic surveying and other surveying projects in its vicinity. The nomenclature varies regionally: they are generally known as trigonometrical or triangulation stations in North America, trig points in the United Kingdom, trig pillars in Ireland, trig stations or points in Australia and New Zealand,[1] and trig beacons in South Africa; triangulation pillar is the more formal term for the concrete columns found in the UK.

OS Maps have a great little article on some of the history of them here.

How to find trig points

Despite trig points being all over the world, this is going to be half the challenge as they are not always easy to find and they are not always defined on maps. If they are shown (and a lot aren’t) they will be shown on 1:25000 scale maps as a triangle with a dot.

Komoot

One of the great aspects of Komoot is its community. Highlights are a great feature which uses local knowledge to showcase the best places to ride. You will only find a handful this way, but its always worth looking near peaks to see if there is highlight near by someone has added. Also don’t forget to check out the tips as well which can be really valuable.

You can also change your map layers to a different map format such as the Open Cycle Map which is great for finding byways and paths.

Trig Log Sites

There are only a few log sites out there. For people in the UK check out TrigpointingUK which has a nearly every single trig point logged! You can even search your area to the find them.

Local Knowledge

Ask your friends and family! You can’t beat local knowledge and you’d be surprised how many people know of one that’s hidden away somewhere.
